Bookkeeping Courses
Our AAT bookkeeping courses teach you how to record, process and check the financial transactions of a business. These practical skills sit at the heart of every finance team. Whether you’re starting from scratch or already work with figures and want a recognised bookkeeping qualification, you can build your skills step by step from Level 1 to Level 3.
You’ll learn double-entry bookkeeping, sales and purchase ledgers, bank reconciliations and control accounts. At Level 3 you’ll also cover VAT and the preparation of financial statements. Every unit is assessed by computer based assessment set by AAT, and our qualified accountants support you throughout.
Choose from Campus Plus classes in London, Live Online sessions or On Demand video lessons. Our bookkeeping courses suit anyone aiming for a role as a bookkeeper, accounts assistant or accounts clerk, or anyone who wants to keep the books for their own business. New to bookkeeping? Start at Level 1 or Level 2, as no previous experience is needed.
AAT Level 1 Bookkeeping
The AAT Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping is the ideal first step if you have no bookkeeping or accounting experience. You’ll learn what a bookkeeper does, how to identify income, expenses, profit and loss, and how to process customer and supplier transactions, receipts and payments. You’ll also see the benefits and risks of using bookkeeping software and why ethical behaviour matters.
The award is a single unit assessed by one computer based assessment, so you can gain a recognised qualification quickly. Level 1 is available On Demand, so you can study at your own pace and start whenever suits you. Many students go straight to Level 2, but Level 1 is a confident way in if you want a gentler start.
Next step: progress to AAT Level 2 Bookkeeping or Level 2 Accounting.
LEARNING APPROACH
AAT Level 2 Bookkeeping
AAT Level 2 is the most popular starting point for beginners.
AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping focuses on core bookkeeping skills: double-entry, processing customer and supplier transactions, and bookkeeping controls.
No previous experience is needed, though a good standard of English and maths helps. Level 2 qualifies you to look for roles such as accounts assistant, accounts clerk or trainee bookkeeper. It also prepares you for Level 3.
Study Level 2 through Campus Plus in London, Live Online or On Demand, and sit your assessments as computer based tests.
LEARNING APPROACH
AAT Level 3 Bookkeeping
AAT Level 3 builds on your Level 2 knowledge with more advanced skills. It’s designed for students who have completed Level 2 or have previous bookkeeping experience.
AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping covers advanced bookkeeping through two units: Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements and Tax Processes for Businesses. You’ll produce final accounts for sole traders and partnerships and handle VAT.
Level 3 can support progression into roles such as assistant accountant, finance officer or senior bookkeeper. Choose Campus Plus, Live Online or On Demand.

CIMA offer direct entry to the CIMA professional qualification. This gives exemptions from all four CIMA Certificate level papers.
